New York is one of the most expensive cities in the world for manufacturers to do business. The growth in the City’s population and its popularity, its shortage of affordable housing, its weak zoning and the invisibility of its manufacturing sector combine to fuel real estate pressure that undermine the city’s manufacturing neighborhoods and threatens industrial jobs. But New York has a vibrant, innovative manufacturing sector. There are still 5,800 manufacturers employing 78,000 people, often in high-paying jobs. The continued vitality of manufacturing stems from the existence of strong, supportive ecosystems and a dedicated community of advocates and service organizations. These ecosystems continually attract entrepreneurs and renew the industries, create operating advantages that increase competitiveness, and provide the design talent, skilled workers and proximity to market that produce high value products that can survive in New York’s high cost environment. Also critical to the vitality of urban manufacturing is the infrastructure of community groups and schools that provide specialized services and advocate for policies, particularly land use policies, that protect and strengthen the ecosystem and that anchor businesses to their communities. This alliance is founded on realization that manufacturing jobs are an essential part of building a just and equitable urban economy.
