An Introduction to the Conservation and Reuse of Historic Industry

James Douet (The International Committee for the Conservation of Industrial Heritage) 산업 활동에서 남겨진 물질적 유물을 연구, 보호 및 사용한다는 개념은 영국에서 처음 시작되어 지난 50년간 산업화를 경험한 전 세계에 퍼져나갔다. 이 개념은 일반적으로 두 개의 보완적 분야로 나뉜다. 하나는 공장, 기계, 광산 경관, 노동자 주택 등 산업화의 물리적 증거를 조사하는 것과 관련된 분야인 산업 고고학이고, 다른 하나는 박물관 및 보존 지구에서 적용하는 법적 보호 및 해석, 그리고 유산의 역사적 가치를 유지하기 위해 유산을 새롭게 활용할 대안 방안을 찾는 노력을 다루는 분야인 산업 유산이다. 이번 발표에서는 이 분야의 역사적 발전 과정을 따라가보고 개념적 경계를 설명한 다음, 산업 고고학자와 산업 전문가가 사용하는 주요 기법을 세계 곳곳의 사례와 함께 살펴보며 이러한 사료를 활용함으로써 얻을 수 있는 이익에 대해서도 알아본다.

The study, protection and use of the material remains of industrial activity has extended over the last fifty years from its origins in Great Britain to reach all parts of the world that have experienced industrialization. It is commonly separated into two complimentary fields, industrial archaeology, which relates to the examination of the physical evidence for industrialization, be it factories, machinery, mining landscapes or workers' houses, and industrial heritage, which usually covers the legal protection, interpretation by museums and conserved sites, and the efforts to find alternative new uses which will also maintain the historical values that have been identified in the first phase. This presentation traces the historical development of the field, explains its the conceptual boundaries, and then examines the main techniques that are used by industrial archaeologist and heritage specialists, with examples taken from around the world, and the benefits that can follow from taking advantage of this historic material.
